01/15/03

Eighteen young people from Fayette and Coweta counties will be traveling to Scotland on January 24 to sing in a Scottish opera. The visit is being coordinated by Global Achievers, a statewide organization that coordinates cultural and educational exchanges between students in Georgia and overseas. The program is headquartered at Shenandoah and is administered by local residents Bette Hickman and Geraldine Welch.

The youthful singers auditioned with Dale Lyles who is leading rehearsals for "The Tale o' Tam" at Newnan Presbyterian Church each Tuesday evening. The group from Newnan will arrive in East Ayrshire on January 25. There will be rehearsals with the Scottish Opera at the Palace Theatre in Kilmarnock on January 29 and 30 with the official performance on January 31.

While in Scotland the group will visit Dean Castle and Country Park, the Tam o' Shanter Experience and Robert Burns Cottage and Museum. Special meals will include a picnic lunch at Culzean Castle and a Farewell Burns Dinner on February 1. There will even be time for swimming in Galleon Center in Kilmarnock on January 27.
